Kukës

Kukes is a city located in northeastern Albania, well known for its beautiful landscapes and large cultural heritage. The Albanian Alps are on one side and the Drin River on the other, reflecting a rich history along with breath-taking natural beauty.

Kukes has traditionally been at the crossroads of several cultures and civilizations. In the town of Old Kukes, now submerged under the waters of the Artificial Lake of Fierza, there was a big settlement before the formation of this lake. This city was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize in 2000 for embracing hundreds of thousands of refugees during the Kosovo War, demonstrating a deep sense of solidarity.

Besides the historical and cultural spots, Kukes is also known for its natural attractions. The canyon, called ‘Bad Stairs,’ is a true wonder of nature, a unique natural monument, and can easily be seen with naked eyes from the city centre. Gjallica Mountain offers an amazing view from its height of over 2.489m above sea level, from which one can see the entire city of Kukes. Trail of Colors offers an incredible landscape, especially in the summer, when many multicoloured flowers bloom across the meadows of Kukes.

Traditional Albanian music and dance are very well-known in the city and are performed live in local festivals and events. Traditional Albanian food with tava e Kukesit, fresh dairy products, and locally grown vegetables will be waiting to entertain the appetite of visitors.
