Root Canal

Does getting a root canal hurt?

Getting a root canal should not be painful during the procedure itself, as the tooth is fully numbed with local anaesthesia. Most patients report feeling pressure or vibration, but not sharp pain. The treatment is designed to relieve the pain caused by infection, not create it.

Some mild soreness is normal in the days following the procedure as the surrounding tissue heals. Over-the-counter pain relief is usually enough to manage this. If you experience intense or worsening pain after the first couple of days, contact your clinic as this may need to be reviewed.

- During the procedure you should feel pressure but not pain — tell your dentist immediately if you do.
- Post-treatment soreness is normal for 2–4 days and typically managed with standard pain relief.
- Worsening pain after day three, swelling, or fever should be reported to your clinic promptly.
