Root Canal

How does a root canal get infected?

A root canal can become reinfected if the final restoration (crown or filling) is delayed or fails, if new decay develops, or if a crack forms in the tooth allowing bacteria to re‑enter. Incomplete sealing of the canals is another possible cause.

- Delaying the final crown is a common reason for reinfection—schedule it as soon as possible.
- Good oral hygiene and regular dental visits prevent new decay on the treated tooth.
- If the tooth feels painful or swollen months later, an X‑ray can determine if retreatment is needed.
