Is a crown a root canal?

No, a crown and a root canal are two different procedures. A root canal treats the inside of the tooth by removing infected nerve tissue, while a crown (cap) restores the outside of the tooth to protect it and restore function. They are often done together when a tooth needs both internal treatment and external protection.

- A root canal is needed when the nerve is infected; a crown is needed when the tooth is weak or heavily filled.
- Placing a crown without a root canal on a healthy tooth is common.
- After a root canal, back teeth almost always require a crown to avoid cracking.
