Root Canal

What's the difference between a root canal and a crown?

A root canal is a procedure that removes infected or damaged nerve tissue from inside the tooth, while a crown (cap) is a restoration that covers the outside of the tooth to protect it and restore its shape and function. They are often done together when a tooth needs both internal treatment and external reinforcement.

- A root canal treats the inside; a crown restores the outside.
- A root canal alone does not make the tooth strong—a crown provides strength.
- Ask your dentist to show you on X‑ray why each procedure is recommended.
