Berat
Known as the "City of One Over One Windows", Berat is located in the Southwest of Albania, approximately 100km away from Tirana. You can get there by renting a car, getting a taxi, or just hopping on the bus. Surrounded by mountains and rivers, this historical 2400 year old city has been a world heritage site together with Gjirokastër since 2008.
According to UNESCO, Berat has played host to a coexistence of various religious and cultural communities during its centuries. Today the city serves as a testimony to the diversity of societies in the Balkans, of various types of monuments and buildings since the Classical Ottoman period.
The city is actually "separated" in two parts: The Old City—the castle which dates back to the 4th century and the New City—Mangalem, the housing complex which belongs to the 18th-19th century and has given Berat the name “City of One Over One Windows”.
Some other cultural and historical sites to visit while in Berat are: the Church of St. Michael (Kisha e Shën Mëhillit), Church of the Holy Trinity (Kisha e Shën Triadhës), Ethnographic Museum and Gorica quarter.
