Gjirokastër
Located in the south of Albania, Gjirokastër is a historic city that lies between the Gjerë mountains to the West and the Drin River. The distance from Tirana to the city would be about 230 kilometers down south, but it can easily be accessed by buses that link it with major cities like Tirana and Saranda. At an altitude of 300 meters, the city offers a breathtaking view of surrounding hills as well as the Drin River.
Gjirokastër played a significant role in different times of Albania’s history, moreso during Ottoman period and resistance against foreign invasions. There are buildings and streets collectively constructed on stone during this period that have given Gjirokastër another name, which is “City of Stone”. The importance of this city's unique architectural style is also associated with its status as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The Gjirokastër Castle is one of the main tourist attractions in the city. It was built in the 12th century and it is one of the largest and most significant fortresses in Albania and in the Balkans. The Gjirokastër Museum and the National Museum of Armaments are an invaluable source of information when looking to learn about this city and its background. Additionally, guests can stop by Zekate House which is an excellent example of Ottoman style architecture and the Ethnographic Museum and gives you a taste of traditional Albanian life.
One of the best things to do in Gjirokastër is to visit the city’s bazaar. Located in the Old Town, this district of zig-zagging streets has been the center of commerce ever since the Ottoman era. The Old Bazaar of Gjirokastër is a market area containing numerous handicrafts, traditional products and souvenirs for visitors to buy.
