Petrela
Petrela village, located a few kilometres South of Tirana, Albania's capital city, is known for its castle and history. This village is located on both sides of the Erzen Valley and is ideal for a weekend getaway.
The Castle of Petrela was built in the 6th century by Justinian I, the Byzantine Emperor, and it is a popular tourist destination. The castle, built on a rocky hill, is a mediaeval fortress once commanded by Skanderbeg's sister, Mamica. The castle, one of Albania's oldest, is open to the public every day of the week at no cost.
Aside from the castle, Petrela has other attractions, such as the Ancient Settlement of Persqop, which is located on the side of the mountain Villa and contains well-preserved traces of dwellings, tombs, and a water supply system that used mountain water.
The Tomb of the Bride is a monument in Mullet village that tells the story of a young bride who was accidentally killed on her wedding day when two opposing pairs crossed the village's entrance and began shooting each other.
Petrela continues to be worth visiting for its beautiful scenery, the history of its castle, the legend of its monuments, and other historical sites, which have transformed this once-hidden gem into a perfect vacation spot.
