Theth

Located in the northern part of Albania, Theth is a small village in Shkodër County very well known for its stunning natural beauty. Situated within the Albanian Alps, getting to Theth will make for an interesting journey, whether you want to hike from Valbona or drive through the mountains.

It is famous for its ancient stone houses and towers, some of which date back to the 5th century, serving to protect the residents from outsiders. Having withstood the test of time for so long, these buildings also provide a unique perspective on how life used to be for the people of Albania in that age. While visiting the village in the early 20th century, Edith Durham said:

“I think no place where human beings live has given me such an impression of majestic isolation from all the world. It is a spot where the centuries shrivel; the river might be the world's well-spring, its banks the fit home of elemental instincts—passions that are red and rapid.” (M. Edith Durham, High Albania, London, Edward Arnold, 1909)

The Blue Eye of Theth is its most frequently visited attraction, just 7km away from the center of the village, also being part of Thethi National Park. It is located between rocky and green slopes with its source being fed mainly by melted snow. Grunasi Waterfall is another beautiful attraction within Thethi National Park and was declared a Natural Monument in 2002. From a height of 25m, the water which falls down into the pond then flows into the valley of Theth.

Aside from its natural beauty, the village has a rich historic culture. Some of the historical attractions include: the Church of Theth, and the first Albanian-language school, founded by Father Shtjefen Gjeçovi. There is also an Ethnographic Museum located in the valley of Theth and built on a large rock, proudly showcasing the Albanian cultural heritage and traditional culture.

This combination of natural beauty and a rich cultural and historical heritage is what makes Theth a must-visit destination.
