Can I drink soda after a root canal?

It is advisable to avoid fizzy drinks and soda for at least 24 to 48 hours after a root canal. Carbonated and acidic drinks can irritate sensitive gum tissue around the treated area and may cause discomfort if the tooth is still tender. They can also soften or disturb a temporary filling if consumed too soon.

Once initial tenderness has settled, you can gradually reintroduce softer drinks, but it is still worth being cautious with very acidic sodas until the final restoration is in place. If in doubt, ask your dentist what to avoid and for how long based on your specific situation.

- Avoid fizzy and acidic drinks for the first 24–48 hours to protect the treated area.
- Sipping through a straw can help reduce contact with the sensitive tooth if needed.
- Once sensitivity settles and a permanent restoration is placed, normal habits can resume.
