Root Canal

Do you get put under anesthesia for a root canal?

Most root canals are performed with local anesthesia only—you remain awake, but the tooth and surrounding area are completely numb. General anesthesia (being “put under”) is very rarely used for root canals and is typically reserved for extensive surgical procedures.

- Local anesthesia is highly effective; you will feel only pressure, not sharp pain.
- If sedation is planned, arrange for someone to accompany you and avoid driving afterward.
- Discuss any anxiety openly—dentists are experienced in making the experience comfortable.
