Root Canal

Does a root canal kill the tooth?

A root canal removes the nerve and pulp inside the tooth, so the tooth no longer feels hot or cold. However, the tooth remains in place and can function normally because its supporting structures (gums and bone) are healthy. In that sense, the tooth is “dead” but still alive in your mouth—it can last for decades with proper care and a crown.

- Think of a root canal as saving the tooth’s shell while removing the source of infection.
- Always place a crown on back teeth after a root canal to prevent fracture.
- Keep regular check‑ups to ensure the tooth remains healthy.
