Root Canal

When is a root canal not possible?

A root canal may not be possible if the tooth has a vertical root fracture that extends below the gumline, if the tooth structure is too damaged to support a crown, or if there is severe bone loss around the root. In such cases, extraction may be the only option.

- Vertical root fractures or extensive decay below the gum usually make a tooth unsalvageable.
- Severe bone loss or periodontal disease may also prevent successful root canal treatment.
- If a root canal isn’t possible, your dentist will discuss replacement options to restore function.
