Root Canal

When is it too late for a root canal?

It is too late for a root canal when the tooth is too damaged to be restored—for example, if it is broken below the gum line, has a vertical root fracture, or if there is not enough healthy tooth structure left to support a crown. In such cases, extraction becomes the only option.

- A vertical root fracture or tooth broken below the gum usually means a root canal cannot save it.
- Early evaluation gives the best chance to save the tooth.
- Even with a large infection, a root canal may still be possible after antibiotics.
